can sugarcane juice cause diabetes

Rian

I am really worried about my sugar levels lately. A friend of mine opened a juice bar and he always raves about sugarcane juice, saying it's super healthy! So, I started drinking it every day, like 2-3 glasses a day honestly, because it tastes amazing and feels refreshing. But then I heard someone mention that can sugarcane juice cause diabetes? I've got a family history of diabetes, my grandma had it, and I'm just anxious now that I'm consuming so much sugarcane juice. I don't have any major symptoms, just feel a bit more tired sometimes, but I thought it was from work stress. I checked my blood sugar a week ago and it was on the higher side of normal. Anyone know if drinking sugarcane juice could actually be a risk? Like how much is too much? I mean, I always thought natural sugars were fine, but now I'm not so sure. I'm really trying to keep my health in check because I don’t want to end up like my grandma. Can sugarcane juice cause diabetes or is that just a myth? I’d appreciate any thoughts or experiences you guys have!

Doctors' responses

Drinking sugarcane juice regularly, especially in large quantities like 2-3 glasses a day, can contribute to increased blood sugar levels. Sugarcane juice is rich in natural sugars, which means it’s high in carbohydrates, and these can quickly spike your blood glucose. While it’s true that it’s a natural source, the body processes it similarly to other sugars, impacting insulin and blood sugar. Given your family history of diabetes, it’s crucial to monitor your sugar intake closely. Diabetes results from a combination of factors including genetic predisposition, lifestyle, and diet. Consuming high-sugar beverages regularly, like sugarcane juice, may put you at a higher risk, particularly if other risk factors are present. It’s worth noting that feeling tired can be linked to blood sugar fluctuations. To manage your risk, consider moderating your intake of sugarcane juice and incorporating more fiber-rich, low-glycemic alternatives into your diet. Checking your blood sugar periodically is wise, especially with your family history. If your readings are consistently high, I recommend discussing them with your healthcare provider, who might suggest lifestyle changes or further tests. Remember, balance is key. Enjoy sugarcane juice occasionally if you like it, but daily consumption in large amounts could be unwise given your circumstances. Cutting back to occasional glasses and pairing it with a healthy, balanced diet can help manage both your enjoyment and your health.
