does sugarcane increase sugar level - #24421

Palak

I am really confused about something and hope someone can help. A few weeks ago, I went to the doctor because I was feeling super sluggish all the time and then I saw my blood sugar levels were kinda high. Doctor said to watch my diet more closely, especially sugar intake. But here’s the thing, last weekend I went to this festival where they had fresh sugarcane juice. Honestly, it was so refreshing, I couldn't resist having a couple of glasses. But then I started wondering, does sugarcane increase sugar levels? I thought it’s natural and all, but maybe that’s not the case? I’ve been reading mixed things on the internet. Some say sugarcane is healthy, while others warn about its sugar content. I mean, I already have a sweet tooth, and I really don’t want to make my blood sugar situation worse! Should I be worried that I indulged in sugarcane juice? Seriously, does sugarcane increase sugar level more than, like, other sweet treats? Should I avoid it completely? I just don’t know what to think anymore! Any advice?

Doctors' responses

Sugarcane juice can definitely contribute to increased blood sugar levels, especially if consumed in large quantities. While it’s a natural source of sugar, it contains sucrose, which can still cause your blood sugar levels to spike much like other sugary drinks or treats. The fact that it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s without impact on your blood glucose. For individuals watching their sugar levels, like yourself, it’s important to be cautious with sugarcane juice. Having it occasionally isn’t necessarily harmful, but moderation is key, especially given your indicated concern about blood sugar levels. Fresh sugarcane juice does have some nutrients and antioxidants, but its high sugar content can outweigh these benefits if consumed too freely. Compare it to other treats, and you’ll notice that its glycemic index can be just as high, meaning it raises your blood sugar quickly. You won’t need to avoid it completely, but next time, try limiting your intake to the small cup instead of multiple glasses. Also, consider the overall context of your diet: balance sugarcane juice with fiber-rich foods or proteins to help stabilize your blood sugar. If you continue to feel sluggish and are concerned about your blood sugar, I’d advise you discuss potential dietary habits and lifestyle modifications with your doctor or a dietitian. They might help construct a tailored plan that considers both your health needs and enjoyment, making it a sustainable approach. Stay attentive to your body’s reactions and keep monitoring your blood sugar levels as advised by your doctor.
