Am I Pregnant and What Are My Options? - #24450

Client_e8fd9a

Hello Doctor, My periods are 42 days late, which is unusual for me because my cycle is normally regular. I had unprotected sex, but my husband did not ejaculate inside. We were not sure about pregnancy, but because my periods were late, I took two home pregnancy tests on different days, and both came back positive. My husband thinks the result might be wrong, but I am worried because both tests were positive. We do not want to continue this pregnancy. I am 18 years old. Could you please confirm if I am likely pregnant and advise whether I should take abortion pills? If yes, which medication is safe and appropriate, and what precautions should I take? Thank you.

Doctors' responses

Given that you are 42 days late on your period and have taken two home pregnancy tests that both returned positive results, it is very likely that you are pregnant. Home pregnancy tests are quite reliable, especially when used after a missed period, as they detect the hormone hCG which is present in significant amounts during pregnancy. Though pre-ejaculatory fluid may also contain sperm, making pregnancy possible even without ejaculation inside, it’s crucial to confirm this with a healthcare professional. A visit to a clinic can provide a more definitive confirmation through a blood test or an ultrasound. Talking to a healthcare provider will also allow you to discuss your options safely and legally.

If you do not wish to continue the pregnancy, it is important to contact a health provider who can guide you through the legal and safe options available for terminating a pregnancy in your area. Relying solely on medication without proper medical supervision is not advisable due to potential complications like incomplete abortion, excessive bleeding, or infection. Mifepristone and misoprostol are two medications that are typically used together for a medical abortion up to 10 weeks, but the right dosages and method of use are crucial and should only be taken under medical guidance in a clinical setting.

Before proceeding with a medical abortion, a full medical history and assessment are necessary to ensure it is safe for you. Follow-ups are essential to ensure the process was complete, preventing any risk of complications. Additionally, comprehensive counseling on post-abortion care and future contraceptive options is highly recommended. Prioritizing your safety by seeking professional medical advice is critical at this time.

I’m a periodontist and academician with a strong clinical and teaching background. Over the last 4 years and 8 months, I’ve been actively involved in dental education, guiding students at multiple levels including dental hygienist, BDS, and MDS programs. Currently, I serve as a Reader at MMCDSR in Ambala, Haryana—a role that allows me to merge my academic passion with hands-on experience. Clinically, I’ve been practicing dentistry for the past 12 years. From routine procedures like scaling and root planing to more advanced cases involving grafts, biopsies, and implant surgeries. Honestly, I still find joy in doing a simple RCT when it’s needed. It’s not just about the procedure but making sure the patient feels comfortable and safe. Academically, I have 26 research publications to my credit. I’m on the editorial boards of the Archives of Dental Research and Journal of Dental Research and Oral Health, and I’ve spent a lot of time reviewing manuscripts—from case reports to meta-analyses and even book reviews. I was honored to receive the “Best Editor” award by Innovative Publications, and Athena Publications recognized me as an “excellent reviewer,” which honestly came as a bit of a surprise! In 2025, I had the opportunity to present a guest lecture in Italy on traumatic oral lesions. Sharing my work and learning from peers globally has been incredibly fulfilling. Outside academics and clinics, I’ve also worked in the pharmaceutical sector as a Drug Safety Associate for about 3 years, focusing on pharmacovigilance. That role really sharpened my attention to detail and deepened my understanding of drug interactions and adverse effects. My goal is to keep learning, and give every patient and student my absolute best.
