will testosterone increase height - #24617

Nikhil

I am 22, and I’ve been really curious about whether testosterone might help me grow taller. I mean, I had this growth spurt back in high school, but then I kinda just stopped around 5’8”, which is a bit frustrating. A couple months ago, my doctor mentioned something about testosterone levels and growth potential, but I didn’t ask for the details. I guess I’ve always thought testosterone was just for building muscle or something. But now I read somewhere that testosterone can impact bone growth too, and that got me wondering, will testosterone increase height at this age? Like, is there any chance it could still work for someone like me? I mean, I’m not looking to be a giant or anything, but just a few inches would be awesome. Also, if it does have the potential to increase height, what’s the safest way to go about it? I definitely don't want to end up messing with my hormones unnecessarily! Any ideas on how testosterone might work for height? Also, why do some people say it can, while others say it’s useless after certain ages? Like, I just want some clear answers here.

Testosterone plays a significant role in growth and development, especially during puberty, as it helps stimulate bone growth and contribute to the development of secondary sexual characteristics. However, by the age of 22, most people have already reached their full height potential because the growth plates in the bones, called epiphyseal plates, generally close after puberty. Testosterone does not have the ability to re-open these growth plates. Once the plates are closed, no further growth in height can occur. That’s why testosterone wouldn’t be useful in increasing height at your age. The misconception around testosterone and height growth outside of puberty might come from its role in earlier age groups where it’s truly a factor in growth. In some medical scenarios, testosterone therapy might be prescribed for growth issues, but that’s mostly applicable for individuals with delayed puberty or specific hormonal deficiencies and must be closely monitored by a healthcare provider. Introducing testosterone supplementation without medical indication can cause various side effects and health risks, such as altering hormone balance, affecting mood, and potentially impacting long-term cardiovascular health. Also, excessively high levels of testosterone could lead to other growth-related issues. Any interest in changing or optimizing your hormonal levels should first be discussed with a healthcare provider who might order tests to assess your current hormonal status and determine if there’s any underlying condition that warrants intervention. Focus instead on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, which includes balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and proper rest to support overall well-being. It’s important to remember that height is largely determined by genetics, and accepting where you are can be very beneficial to your overall mindset and health.
