can we drink sugarcane juice in diabetes

Aadhyant

I am really confused about sugars and diabetes, especially with summer here and all the fresh juices around. A few days ago, my cousin insisted that sugarcane juice is super healthy and refreshing, but then I started thinking about my blood sugar levels. I was diagnosed with diabetes about two years ago and I've been trying to manage it with diet and exercise. But now I'm wondering, can we drink sugarcane juice in diabetes or should I totally stay away from it? At first, I thought, “Wow, it's natural! It must be okay, right?” but then I remember my doctor saying something about how all sugars can affect blood glucose, even the natural ones like honey or fruit. I did some quick searching online, and there seems to be mixed opinions on sugarcane juice for people with diabetes. Like, I found some forums with folks saying it has a low glycemic index but then others contradict it and say it's high in sugar. Can anyone help me out here? What’s the actual deal? Can we drink sugarcane juice in diabetes, and if it's okay sometimes, how much should I drink without worrying about my blood sugar spiking? Would love to get some personal thoughts and experiences on this!

Doctors' responses

While sugarcane juice is a refreshing and natural beverage, it is indeed high in natural sugars, which can lead to a rapid increase in blood glucose levels. This is a key point to consider for anyone managing diabetes, as maintaining stable blood sugar levels is crucial. Despite its natural origins, the sugar content is high — much like fruit juices — and similar to other simple carbohydrates, it can spike your blood glucose. Some sources might suggest it has a lower glycemic index compared to others, but the overall sugar load still poses a risk for hyperglycemia. When managing diabetes, it’s generally recommended to avoid beverages with high sugar content, focusing instead on those that have minimal effect on your blood sugar. However, if you’re keen on having sugarcane juice, moderation and careful monitoring of your blood glucose levels around its consumption could potentially allow occasional indulgence. But I’d advise against regularly including it in your diet. Instead, focus on staying hydrated with water, herbal teas, or other non-sweetened beverages. If you really want to incorporate a bit of indulgence, perhaps discuss it with your healthcare provider or a dietitian who could provide guidance tailored personally to you about how to safely integrate such items in your diet, while managing your diabetes effectively. They might suggest doing some blood sugar testing around when you drink it to see how significantly it impacts your levels. This practical approach will help you determine if it works for you without compromising your health.
