What you’re describing sounds most like gynecomastia, a condition that’s quite common during puberty when hormonal changes can cause temporary breast tissue enlargement in boys. It’s generally due to an imbalance between testosterone and estrogen levels, which should typically resolve as hormone levels stabilize over time. This condition often doesn’t cause severe pain, though some tenderness may occur. However, it’s crucial to rule out other causes as well. Though gynecomastia is often benign, it’s a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider to ensure proper assessment and diagnosis. They may want to conduct a physical examination and possibly some hormone level tests or an ultrasound if there’s any uncertainty. Since this has been ongoing for a few years, monitoring changes over time is important. You could also discuss factors like any medications, supplements, or lifestyle factors—such as diet, exercise, or drug use—that may influence hormone levels. In some situations, persistent gynecomastia might need further evaluation to rule out liver issues, thyroid function irregularities, or rare endocrine disorders. Red-flag symptoms, such as significant pain, rapid growth, or discharge from the nipple, should prompt prompt medical evaluation. If it’s determined to be typical gynecomastia and isn’t causing physical or emotional discomfort, treatment might simply be reassurance and monitoring, since it often resolves spontaneously. However, if concerns about appearance are significant, your doctor might explore options like medication or, in some persistent cases, surgery.
