can you overdose on gabapentin - #25739
I am really worried about what's been going on with me lately. A few weeks ago, I was prescribed gabapentin for my nerve pain, and at first it seemed to help, but sometime last week I kinda forgot how many I had taken. I mean, I thought I was down to one or two pills a day, but later found out I took more than I should've, like three or four instead!! I feel super confused about this whole thing, and honestly, I'm scared. I've read stuff online about overdosing and I can't stop thinkin' can you overdose on gabapentin? It feels silly to be this paranoid, but I've been feeling kinda dizzy like my head's all foggy. I also get this weird throbbing in my chest sometimes, or maybe it's just anxiety? I don’t know! My friends say I should've been more careful but it's hard when the pain makes everything fuzzy like that. I talked to my doctor but she just brushed it off – said it was fine as long as I wasn’t taking crazy doses, which makes me wonder, like, can you overdose on gabapentin? I’m not trying to freak myself out, but what if I am taking too much and I didn't even mean to? Is there a point where it's just not okay anymore? Any advice would really help!

Doctors' responses
Yes, it is possible to overdose on gabapentin, although it generally has a wide safety margin compared to some other medications. Still, taking more than the prescribed dose can lead to increased side effects or signs of toxicity. For some people, taking a higher dose than intended, like what you’ve described, might lead to dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and potentially more significant symptoms if the amount continues to increase. The anxiety and chest throbbing you’re feeling could be attributed to anxiety, especially if you’re worrying about taking too much, but it’s important to not dismiss these sensations outright. If you’re experiencing persistent or worsening symptoms, it’s important to discuss these with your doctor again. Clearly communicate your concerns and experiences with the medication, including any accidental overuse. In some cases, they may adjust your dosage, offer an alternative treatment plan, or perform checks to ensure your safety. It’s essential to have a system to track your medication to avoid accidental overdosing, such as a pill organizer or setting reminders. If you do accidentally take a significantly larger dose than prescribed or you experience severe symptoms like substantial confusion, difficulty breathing, or seizures, seek immediate medical attention. Making sure you’re properly informed about the safe use of gabapentin and other medications, along with having regular check-ins with your healthcare provider, can help manage your condition safely and effectively.
