what foods help with diarrhea - #25917

Ishita

I am feeling pretty worried about stomach issues I’ve been having lately! For the past week, I’ve been dealing with diarrhea that just won’t quit, and it’s been really disrupting my life, you know? I’ve tried drinking lots of water, but it’s hard to eat anything without feeling sick. I’ve read that certain foods can help with diarrhea, but I’m not really sure what to go for. I've come across lists online that say bananas, rice, and toast are good options—like the BRAT diet or whatever? I mean, I can see how banana might be easy on the tummy, but is pasta also okay? My best friend told me chicken broth could work, but I’m nervous about trying too much right now. Does anyone know what foods help with diarrhea actually? Like, are there other options outside of the usual stuff? And should I be worried if this doesn't clear up soon? I just want to feel normal again and not spend my life glued to the bathroom! I’ve been thinking of adding some yogurt back in, but I heard dairy can be a problem sometimes. Ugh, why is this so complicated? Any advice on what foods help with diarrhea would be super appreciated! Thanks!

When you’re dealing with diarrhea, it makes sense to be cautious about what you add to your diet. You rightly mentioned the BRAT diet—bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast—to widely known be gentle on the stomach. Bananas provide potassium, which can help replace electrolytes lost through frequent bowel movements. Rice, particularly white rice, is bland and easy to digest, plus it helps bind stools. Applesauce offers a source of pectin, a type of soluble fiber that can aid in firming up stools, while toast provides carbohydrates without overwhelming your digestive system.

As for pasta, it can be okay if it’s plain and made from white, refined flour, as whole grains might be too rough on your stomach right now. Chicken broth is a good choice too as it’s gentle, hydrating, and can help replenish lost sodium. Regarding yogurt, be cautious: while it can be beneficial for some due to probiotics, others may find dairy troublesome during a diarrheal episode.

Aside from these, incorporating boiled potatoes or cooked carrots can also be soothing. Ensure to keep them plain without added fats, which might aggravate your symptoms. Stay away from caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods, and foods high in fiber or fat as these could worsen the condition. Diarrhea for more than a week warrants medical attention to rule out underlying causes. If you experience severe pain, blood in your stool, or signs of dehydration like dizziness or decreased urination, see a healthcare professional promptly. Keeping well-hydrated is crucial, so continue to drink fluids, preferably with a bit of salt and sugar to aid in absorption. Remember, if ever in doubt, it’s always best to reach out to a healthcare provider.
