detoxification by liver - #21590

Arnav

I am really worried about my health lately. My doctor mentioned detoxification by liver and honestly, I’m kinda confused. About two months ago, I started feeling really fatigued, and I was having these weird rashes that would come and go. A friend said it might be related to my liver not detoxifying properly. I mean, I do drink more than I probably should, and I eat a lot of junk food, which I know isn't great. I got my blood work done, and the liver function tests were borderline, but my doc didn’t seem super concerned? Is that normal? Like, should I be doing something to support detoxification by liver? I read about some detox diets but I’m not sure if they actually help with liver health or if they’re just a gimmick. Sometimes I feel like I just want to flush everything out! I tried drinking more water, but I don’t notice a difference. It’s just all so frustrating. Anyone have experience with detoxification by liver issues? What did you do? Did it work? I’m just hoping I’m not on a path to something worse.

Doctors' responses

The liver is indeed crucial for detoxification, clearing harmful substances from your blood, processing nutrients, and more. If your liver function tests showed borderline results, it’s worth monitoring, but typically doctors are more concerned about significant deviations from the norm. Fatigue and rashes might be related but aren’t exclusive to liver dysfunction—they can arise from various conditions or lifestyle factors. Consuming excessive alcohol and junk food can place an additional burden on the liver—over time leading to fatty liver disease or more severe liver issues. To support liver health, the most effective strategy is adopting broader lifestyle measures: reduce alcohol intake, choose balanced meals rich in fruits, veggies, lean proteins, and whole grains, and maintain a healthy weight. Many marketed “detox” diets lack scientific backing and could actually stress the liver further. Rather than seeking quick fixes, make gradual, healthy changes. Exercise is vital too, enhancing overall well-being and aiding liver function. If you continue feeling unwell or symptoms escalate, re-consulting your doctor is essential to reassess liver health and rule out other potential conditions. Be wary of embarking on diets or supplements promising detoxification without professional counsel, as they could worsen your situation or mask underlying problems. Your hydration efforts are beneficial—it aids metabolism and is part of a liver-friendly regimen. Remember, ongoing symptoms or increased concerns warrant a follow-up. Prioritize a long-term, sustainable approach to support your liver and general health.
