benefits of eating curd daily - #27433

Ananya

I am dealing with some digestive issues and heard that there are several benefits of eating curd daily. My friend recommended it, but I’m a little skeptical about how it’ll actually help me. I’ve noticed that after meals, especially if I have something heavy, I feel bloated and uncomfortable. A few weeks ago, my doctor said my gut health needs attention, and he mentioned probiotics could be beneficial. I’ve tried probiotics in capsule form but I think I might prefer something more natural, like curd. I keep hearing about how the benefits of eating curd daily are not just hype and that it could improve digestion, which is what I'm really aiming for. But, like, how much do I need to eat? Is there a specific type of curd that's better? Plus, can eating too much curd actually have downsides? I don’t want to switch one problem for another, you know? Also, my mom told me that curd can help with skin and hair too! Are those really benefits of eating curd daily or just old wives' tales? Any advice from you all would be super helpful!

Doctors' responses

Eating curd daily can indeed have several benefits, particularly for your digestive health. Curd, being a probiotic food, contains live bacteria that can help balance your gut microbiota. When your gut health is in check, it often translates to improved digestion consequently reducing issues like bloating and discomfort after meals. A daily intake of about a cup (200-300 ml) of curd is generally recommended to reap its benefits. Opt for plain, unsweetened curd or yogurt, as flavored ones often contain added sugars, which can counteract the benefits.

In terms of probiotic content, homemade curd or Greek yogurt can be excellent choices as they typically contain a natural fermentation process with a variety of beneficial bacteria. When it comes to downsides, excessive consumption of curd might lead to increased acidity in some individuals or even lactose intolerance symptoms in those sensitive to dairy. So, monitor how your body reacts and adjust the amount as necessary.

Beyond digestion, curd has long been associated with skin and hair benefits. The live cultures can enhance skin texture by balancing pH and treating dryness when applied topically. However, these effects are largely anecdotal and haven’t been conclusively proven in scientific studies, so consider other skincare practices as well.

Incorporating curd into your diet is easy; you can have it as part of your main meal or a quick snack. If you’re dairy-sensitive, opt for lactose-free options or starter cultures for homemade versions. Make sure to consult a healthcare provider if digestive symptoms persist, as they could recommend further tests or treatments needed for your condition.
