What could be causing my constipation and bloating at 19, and do I need tests or treatment?

Client_d48927

I'm 19 years old. I've had constipation on and off for years. Sometimes I don't have a bowel movement for 3–4 days. I often feel bloated, full, and lose my appetite until I pass stool. My stools vary between hard, normal, and loose. I don't usually have severe abdominal pain, but I feel better after a bowel movement. I exercise regularly, drink water, and eat around 1500–1600 calories a day. What could be causing this, and do I need any tests or treatment?"

Your symptoms suggest that you might be dealing with a functional bowel disorder like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or simply occasional constipation, both of which are common at your age. These conditions can sometimes cause changes in bowel patterns like what you’re experiencing. Lack of dietary fiber may also play a role. You mentioned that your calorie intake is around 1500–1600 per day; ensure it includes enough fiber, around 25–30 grams daily. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes are good sources. Increasing fiber can help regulate bowel movements, though it’s important to do so gradually to prevent gas and bloating. Regarding hydration, maintaining proper fluid intake is essential, but as you’re already drinking water regularly, monitoring for further needs can be helpful as well. While your symptoms might not require urgent testing, it would still be wise to consult your GP for a thorough evaluation. They may suggest trying lifestyle modifications initially, but if the symptoms persist or worsen, some basic tests, like checking for celiac disease or thyroid problems, might be considered. It’s crucial, though, to watch for any red-flag symptoms, such as unintentional weight loss, blood in stools, or severe abdominal pain, which would necessitate prompt medical evaluation. Don’t ignore persistent or troublesome symptoms; if you’re unsure or uncomfortable, checking in with a healthcare provider is always a sound step. Additionally, maintaining a food and symptom diary can offer insights into any dietary triggers connected to your condition and help guide both you and your doctor in management strategies.
