disadvantages of eating curd rice - #28587
I am really concerned about something that’s been bothering me lately. My grandmother always swore by curd rice, saying it’s super healthy and easy to digest, but I’ve been hearing a lot about the disadvantages of eating curd rice too. Lately, every time I have it, which is like 3-4 times a week, I feel this weird bloating sensation and it just doesn’t sit well with me. A few weeks ago, I even noticed that my stomach was making these gurgling noises after lunch, and I thought maybe it was just something else I'd eaten, but then I had curd rice again and the same stuff happened! It’s really frustrating because I thought curd rice was supposed to be a good food choice, you know? Anyway, I did some googling and found people mentioning the disadvantages of eating curd rice, like possible weight gain or it being hard to digest for some folks. Is there any truth to this or is it just overblown? Also, did I mention that I'm kinda lactose intolerant too? That’s why I’m thinking could this be related or maybe something else entirely? I just want to enjoy my meals without feeling like a balloon! What do you all think?

Curd rice, a staple dish for many, is generally considered healthy due to its probiotics and ease of digestion. However, like most foods, it may have downsides or suit everyone. If you’re experiencing bloating and discomfort after eating curd rice, especially if you have lactose intolerance, that could indeed be a primary factor. Curd or yogurt does contain lactose, albeit in reduced amounts compared to milk. For someone lactose intolerant, even small amounts might lead to symptoms like bloating, gas, and gurgling stomach noises. If the intolerance isn’t too severe, you might tolerate some forms of fermented dairy, but this varies significantly among individuals. You should consider trying lactose-free yogurt or consider taking lactase enzyme supplements when consuming dairy; this could help alleviate symptoms. Additionally, some people experience digestive discomfort from curd rice due to the combination of rice and yogurt, which can be heavy on digestion for certain individuals. This is noted, particularly if high starch foods like rice aren’t balanced with enough fiber or are consumed in large amounts. If you suspect this combination doesn’t agree with your digestive system, try altering your serving size or eating rice only with plenty of vegetables to add fiber. Excess intake of any one type of food, even healthy, can also contribute to imbalances like weight gain or digestive issues. Moderation is key, and observing how your body reacts to different foods is crucial. If you continue having persistent symptoms despite dietary adjustments, consult with a healthcare provider for a deeper evaluation. They can assess other potential underlying causes and guide you through an elimination diet if food intolerances are a concern.
