Is it okay if we wait till next morning - #29164
I am just really worried about this recent situation with my 8-year-old son. He’s been having this fever that comes and goes, and last night it spiked to 103.5°F. My wife and I were up all night trying to cool him down and keep him comfortable, managing the chills and the kicking. We even gave him some acetaminophen which helped a bit. We were thinking of taking him to the ER but then decided against it. In the end, we figured he might be okay just to see how he reacts overnight. But now I can’t stop second-guessing, you know? Especially since we also heard he might have been exposed to some flu at school. I keep thinking, is it okay if we wait till next morning to take him in? I mean, we checked his breathing, and he seems to be sleeping a bit better now, but still... I’m just anxious. If he gets worse overnight, what’s the point of waiting, right? I just wanna do what's best for him, but how do you even know the difference between a kid just needing rest and something serious? Are there specific signs I should be watching for?

Doctors' responses
Given your son’s high fever persisting at 103.5°F despite your efforts, it’s understandable that you’d be concerned. Since fever in children often signals an infection, particularly exposure to flu, it tends to be self-limited, but there are key indicators that help determine the need for immediate medical attention. You’re right to consider how he’s breathing: checking his breathing is crucial. If he struggles to breathe, breathes rapidly, or makes wheezing or grunting sounds, those could be warning signs. Pay attention to his level of activity and hydration too. If he is unusually lethargic or difficult to rouse, if he’s refusing to drink fluids or has decreased urination, those are concerning. Also watch for symptoms like persistent vomiting, a rash that doesn’t fade on pressing, or if the fever is unresponsive to medications like acetaminophen. If any of these red-flag signs appear, you should seek medical help immediately, perhaps at an urgent care or ER, even overnight. Should the fever persist without improvement or worsen, visiting your pediatrician in the morning would be wise. For now, keep monitoring his symptoms, ensuring he stays hydrated, and continue with fever-reducing measures as needed. Remember, it’s about balancing vigilance swiftly with the potential for serious conditions. Only delay seeking immediate care if his symptoms are stable with no new alarming developments. Always err on the side of caution when necessary.
