Given the age of your baby and the symptoms you’re describing — especially the grunting and apparent difficulty breathing — it’s important to have him evaluated by a pediatrician as soon as possible. At such a young age, respiratory symptoms can escalate quickly, and it’s essential to rule out conditions like bronchiolitis, RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus), or other respiratory infections that could require medical intervention. The fact that he’s breastfeeding well and maintaining good wet diaper output is a positive sign, indicating he’s staying hydrated and receiving nutrition. However, the difficulty in breathing, especially during sleep, and the nasal congestion can be concerning. A pediatrician might want to check his oxygen saturation and listen to his lungs to ensure there’s no lower respiratory tract involvement. In the meantime, you can try saline drops to help relieve nasal congestion. Use a bulb syringe to gently clear his nasal passages if he’s having trouble breathing through his nose, particularly before feedings or sleep. Ensure the room is humidified to help ease his breathing overnight. But, these measures are supportive only and shouldn’t delay getting him assessed by a healthcare provider. If you notice any significant change in his activity level, increased grunting, or signs of respiratory distress, such as nostril flaring or retractions of the chest, don’t hesitate to seek immediate medical attention. It’s always better to err on the side of caution with newborns.
