Under tongue irritation and sore area on lingual frenulum

Rohan

I am really struggling with this annoying issue. I’ve noticed under tongue irritation and sore area on lingual frenulum for about a week now. At first, I thought I bit it while eating or something, but it’s just gotten worse! Like, it’s super sensitive, and I can feel pain when I try to eat or even talk. I’ve been rinsing with saltwater, hoping to ease the under tongue irritation a bit, but it seems to be doing nothing. Plus, I noticed some white patches (ew) forming around the sore area on lingual frenulum, which freaks me out. Just last night, I tried to see if there’s anything I could do, but I don’t want to poke around too much and make things worse. Some of my friends are saying it could be from stress or thrush, but I’m not sure – I’ve never had anything like this before. Has anyone else dealt with under tongue irritation and sore area on lingual frenulum? What did you do? Should I see a doctor, or could there be some home remedy I haven’t heard about? You folks always have great advice and I could use some help!

Doctors' responses

Under tongue irritation and a sore area along the lingual frenulum can indeed be bothersome, and the presence of white patches adds complexity to the situation. A few things could be causing these symptoms. Common reasons include trauma from biting, irritation from dental appliances, or possibly an infection. The mention of white patches may indicate a fungal infection like oral thrush, especially if you’re experiencing a burning sensation or it doesn’t resolve with home remedies. While stress could contribute to oral health issues by compromising your immune system, it wouldn’t directly cause white patches or a persistent sore. For immediate relief, avoiding irritants is crucial—this means steering clear of hot, spicy, acidic foods, and practicing good oral hygiene. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush and keeping the area clean can prevent further irritation. Continue with saline rinses, but if there’s no improvement within a few days, it’s wise to consult with a dentist or doctor for a definitive diagnosis. They may perform a visual examination and possibly take a swab if they suspect an infection. If it is thrush, antifungal medication might be necessary to clear it up. Keep an eye on the symptoms, especially if they worsen or spread, as that could indicate a need for medical attention sooner. A healthcare professional will be able to guide you more accurately. This approach prioritizes your health and safety by ensuring more serious underlying issues aren’t overlooked.
