Open forearm wound severe pain limited moveme

Neil

I am dealing with this super frustrating situation that started a couple weeks ago. I have an open forearm wound from a climbing accident, and let me tell you, the severe pain is just insufferable!! The doctors at the ER said it was just "normal healing," but I feel like this is a whole lot more than that! I can't even move my arm properly without a jolt of pain shooting through it. Like, literally, any time I try to lift something or even just bend my elbow, there's this intense ache that's hard to ignore. I mean, I thought an open forearm wound would heal and maybe hurt a bit but this is different. It’s almost like my forearm is constantly on fire or something! Could this be a sign of infection? Or maybe I'm just being paranoid? I’ve been keeping it clean and covered but still, I'm just scared it's not healing right. If anyone has experience with open forearm wound healing, could the severe pain and limited movement mean something is seriously wrong? I need some advice before I go back to the doctor's again and get brushed off!!

Doctors' responses

With an open forearm wound that’s giving you severe pain and is limiting your movement, it’s crucial not to dismiss these symptoms. While some discomfort is expected during the healing process, the intensity and nature of your pain—as well as difficulty in moving your arm—can be red flags indicating something more serious. Significant pain, especially pain that prevents you from performing regular activities, might suggest an underlying issue like an infection or improper healing. Infections are common concerns with open wounds, and they can present as increased pain, swelling, redness, or warmth around the area. You can also watch for fever or pus discharge, which are more definitive signs. Another potential concern could be nerve or tendon damage, especially if there’s shooting pain when you try to move. While you mentioned an ER visit, follow-up with a primary care provider or a specialist in wound care or orthopedics might be warranted given your persistent and severe symptoms. It’s important to advocate for yourself and express to your healthcare provider how this pain is impacting your daily life and recovery. In the meantime, continue keeping the wound clean and covered, as you’ve been doing. Over-the-counter pain medications might help, but don’t let them mask ongoing symptoms without checking the underlying problem. It’s advisable to seek further medical evaluation to rule out issues like deep infection or tissue damage. If you experience increased pain, fever, or any new symptoms, consider seeking more immediate medical attention.
