What can i do right now to relieve this severe jaw muscle pain

Agastya

I am dealing with this awful jaw muscle pain and I really need some advice. It started a few days ago, I was having dinner and suddenly felt this intense ache in my jaw. I thought it was just some weird muscle cramp, but the pain has gotten worse. I can't even chew properly without wincing. It's affecting my mood too – even talking hurts. I've tried hot compresses and some over-the-counter pain meds, but honestly, nothing seems to work. I keep wondering, what can I do right now to relieve this severe jaw muscle pain? I read somewhere that stretching might help, but it kinda hurts to move it. Should I be trying to massage it or something? Also, is this related to stress? I’ve been more anxious lately with work stuff, maybe I got into some bad habits, like clenching my jaw without realizing. Seriously, any suggestions on what can I do right now to relieve this severe jaw muscle pain would be super appreciated. I can’t take this anymore! Thanks in advance, hope to hear from anyone soon!

Doctors' responses

Jaw muscle pain can be quite distressing and it’s important to address both the symptoms and potential causes to find some relief. First, let’s focus on the most immediate steps you can take to alleviate the pain. You mentioned clenching your jaw—this is often linked with stress, and indeed stress can cause or exacerbate temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, which could be the root of your pain. To relieve the pressure on your jaw, you might try consciously keeping your jaw relaxed. Place your tongue on the roof of your mouth with your teeth slightly apart, which can help reduce muscle tension. Additionally, gentle massage might indeed help. Use your fingers to apply light pressure in a circular motion to the jaw muscles that feel tense. However, if it significantly hurts, stop.

It’s good that you’ve tried heat packs—they can improve blood flow and ease muscle stiffness. If they have not been effective, consider alternating with cold packs, which can reduce any swelling. Apply a cold pack wrapped in a cloth to the jaw for about 10 minutes, ensuring you don’t place ice directly on the skin. Make sure you’re taking any over-the-counter pain medication at the appropriate dosage and schedule recommended on the packaging, sometimes consistency with them can aid in pain management.

If these strategies provide no relief or if the pain intensifies, you should see a healthcare provider. Persistent pain might need further investigation to rule out conditions like TMJ disorder, dental issues, or other underlying problems. Try also to be mindful of any habits like teeth grinding or chewing gum, and attempt to limit them. In relation to stress, incorporating stress management techniques such as regular physical activity, mindfulness, or even yoga can be beneficial, not just for your jaw pain, but overall well-being. If stress and anxiety are significant concerns, discussing them with a healthcare provider can be a step towards broader, more sustainable relief. Prioritize seeing a dentist or doctor if pain persists beyond a couple of days, as they can provide more specific interventions suited to your condition.
