Low hr after coming off metoprolol - #29343
I am a bit worried about my heart rate after stopping metoprolol. I was on a pretty high dose for my blood pressure, and my doctor said it was okay to taper down. When I finally got off it completely about, like, a week ago, I noticed my heart rate is super low, like way lower than what it used to be. I mean, I'm talking in the 50s resting, sometimes even lower! Is that normal? I was just reading online that low hr after coming off metoprolol can be a thing, but I'm not sure what to think. I've been feeling a bit more tired lately too, and wondering if there’s a connection. I’m not really sure if I should be concerned or just ride it out. I don’t have any other crazy symptoms, except the fatigue and occasional dizziness when I stand up too fast. Has anyone else gone through this low hr after coming off metoprolol? Like, how long does it last? Should I see my doctor again or just give it more time? I really don’t want to end up back on meds if I can avoid it! Just trying to make sense of everything here, any experiences or advice would help, thank you!

Doctors' responses
A lower heart rate after stopping metoprolol isn’t uncommon, as it’s a beta-blocker that typically slows the heart rate. When discontinued, your body can take some time to adjust, and this can result in a lower resting heart rate than usual. Since you mentioned feeling fatigue and dizziness, it’s important to pay attention to these symptoms, even if mild. These could be related to your body’s cardiovascular response post-medication. One thing to monitor is whether you experience significant feelings of fatigue or dizziness that interfere with daily activities, as these could suggest your heart may not be pumping sufficient blood efficiently. It’s usually advisable to consult with your doctor in such cases. They might want to check your blood pressure and perform some tests to rule out any other underlying issues or consider if a slower taper, if anything, could’ve been beneficial. Meanwhile, ensure you stay hydrated, rise slowly from sitting or lying positions to lessen dizziness, and avoid any strenuous activities without medical clearance. If symptoms worsen — like if the dizziness becomes sever or if you experience any chest pain or shortness of breath, seek urgent medical care. Each individual’s response can vary, but generally, your body should start normalizing after a few weeks off metoprolol. However, ongoing symptoms necessitate a review by your healthcare provider to ensure there’s no other issue at play.
