Can ectopic beats in a healthy heart lead to serious heart problems like cardiac arrest or atrial fibrillation?
Hi I would be grateful if you could help me better cope with the skipped heartbeats (ectopic beats/palpitations) that I experience. Over the past approximately 10 years, I have undergone several cardiac evaluations. My most recent assessment was 2 years ago and included a 24-hour Holter monitor, ECG, and echocardiogram. Holter monitor results: Total heartbeats: 128,839 Maximum/minimum heart rate: 135/66 bpm Average heart rate: 94 bpm Sinus rhythm maximum/minimum heart rate: 135/66 bpm Average awake/sleep heart rate: 100/84 bpm Circadian index: 1.19 Tachycardia/bradycardia burden: 26% / 0% Maximum RR interval: 1050 ms Pauses: 0 Maximum ST elevation: 0.37 mV in lead V1 Maximum ST depression: none Total ventricular ectopic beats (PVCs): 7 Maximum PVCs per hour: 2 Total supraventricular ectopic beats (PACs): 4 Echocardiogram: Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF): 63% Otherwise normal findings My cardiologist told me that my heart is structurally normal and healthy. I am a 41-year-old woman. I do not smoke, drink alcohol, or take any medications. My blood pressure is normal, and I monitor it at home 2–3 times per week. I often feel more skipped beats than were captured during the Holter recording. Sometimes I experience approximately 10–15 ectopic beats per day, and on some occasions they occur every 10–15 minutes. My only symptoms are the sensation of the skipped beats themselves and significant anxiety because I do not know what consequences they might have. They are also very unpleasant to feel. What worries me the most is when they occur more frequently, for example several times per minute, or when I feel 2–3 ectopic beats in a row. In those situations, I become very frightened because I worry that the increased frequency may develop into a more serious arrhythmia. Could you please tell me whether ectopic beats of this type, in a person with a structurally normal heart, can lead to cardiac arrest or a heart attack? Could they trigger atrial fibrillation or another dangerous heart rhythm disorder? Thank you
