Doctors' responses

Having mixed stool consistency combined with occasional bright red blood can be due to various reasons, and it’s understandable to be concerned given your family history. If the blood is bright red, it often suggests that it’s originating from the lower gastrointestinal tract, possibly from anal fissures or hemorrhoids, especially with constipation. But, given that your father had colon cancer and you’re having these symptoms, it’s wise to take this seriously. A diagnosis of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) fits with some of your symptoms, especially under stress, but the bleeding is worth investigating more thoroughly. A gastroenterologist might recommend a colonoscopy or other imaging studies to rule out any structural causes or polyps, especially to allay any cancer concerns. Managing stress properly is incredibly important. Anxiety can exacerbate IBS symptoms. Techniques like mindfulness, yoga, or cognitive behavioral therapy might be beneficial. You could also see a dietitian to help identify potential IBS triggers and adjust your diet to one low in FODMAPs, which might improve your stool consistency. Do ensure you’re not delaying any potential diagnostic procedures your health care provider might suggest. Stay hydrated and maintain a balanced diet with enough fiber, though be mindful of insoluble fiber which might worsen symptoms for some. If blood in the stool becomes more frequent or heavy, seek medical attention promptly.
