I am 19 years old and naturally very skinny. I feel that my breast size is very small compared to my body, and I wanted medical guidance about whether this is normal at my age. Should I get any hormone or health tests done? My periods are heavy flow.

At 19, it’s quite possible for breast size to continue to change. Breast development typically completes by the early 20s, so there’s room for natural growth. Variations in breast size are largely due to genetic factors, hormonal fluctuations, and body weight changes. If you’re concerned about your breast size in the context of your overall health, it’s reasonable to consider some natural methods to possibly enhance fullness and look into underlying health factors. Nutrition-wise, maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats can support overall health, including breast tissue. Foods rich in phytoestrogens, such as flaxseeds, soy products, and certain nuts, have been said to modestly influence estrogen levels, though evidence on their effectiveness in changing breast size is limited and mixed. Exercise can help tone the pectoral muscles under the breasts, potentially giving a slight lift and improved appearance. Targeted exercises like push-ups and chest presses are commonly recommended. However, there’s no specific exercise shown to increase breast volume. Regarding hormonal assessments, if you’re experiencing irregularities like extremely heavy periods, it might be worthwhile to discuss this with a healthcare provider who could check for hormonal imbalances or other underlying conditions. Also, sudden changes in breast size or health concerns should prompt a medical evaluation. Generally, breast-related issues would not require hormone testing unless other symptoms of hormonal imbalance (e.g., significant changes in weight, mood, or skin health) are present. Always consult with your doctor before trying supplements or treatments. Surgery or hormone therapy to alter breast size carries risks and should be approached with a full understanding shared between you and your healthcare provider. While achieving a certain breast size might not be feasible for everyone through non-invasive means, maintaining good overall physical health is the best way to support your natural development. Keep in mind that what’s most important is health and comfort with your own body, not just a particular size. Any concerns about heavy menstrual bleeding or potential hormonal issues should be addressed with appropriate diagnostic tests guided by professional medical advice.
