What to do if my dog scraped my hand and I have a cut, is there a rabies risk?

Client_9e5aa9

I was playing with my pet dog, which is vaccinated against rabies. While playing, one of its teeth accidentally scraped my hand. There was no bleeding, but I already had a small existing wound/cut on that area. I am worried whether the dog's saliva could have entered the wound and if there is any risk of rabies. The mark looks like a minor scratch and there is no significant pain or bleeding. Could you please advise if I need any treatment or vaccination? Thank you.

Is your dog up-to-date on its vaccinations?:

- No, I have never been vaccinated

Are you currently experiencing any unusual symptoms?:

- No symptoms

Doctors' responses

The risk of rabies in this scenario is extremely low, especially if your dog is up-to-date on its rabies vaccinations. Rabies transmission typically involves a deep bite where the virus from an infected animal’s saliva enters the bloodstream, and this doesn’t sound like your situation. However, it’s always wise to act on the side of caution regarding any wounds involving animals. First, clean the area thoroughly with soap and water to minimize any infection risk. Pat it dry gently to ensure you don’t cause any additional irritation. Rabies post-exposure prophylaxis is not usually required if the pet is vaccinated and the contact is minor, like in your case. Monitor the wound for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or pus, as these would need medical attention, but they are not indicative of rabies. If there’s any uncertainty about your dog’s vaccination status or if similar incidents happen frequently, consulting with a healthcare professional would be a good step to discuss any need for further protective measures. They might suggest keeping your tetanus vaccination current, as it’s generally a good idea with any cuts. Avoiding unnecessary worries is important here but don’t hesitate to reach out to medical services in case the wound doesn’t heal as expected.
