Unexplained weight loss and fatigue in an 18-year-old could be due to a variety of conditions, so it’s important to get a thorough evaluation. First, I’d recommend a complete blood count (CBC) to look for anemia or infection, which could explain your fatigue. A comprehensive metabolic panel would also be useful to assess kidney and liver function, blood sugar levels for diabetes screening, and electrolytes. Thyroid function tests (TSH, T3, and T4) should be done to rule out hyperthyroidism, a condition that can cause weight loss and fatigue. Since stress seems to play a role, it might be worth exploring whether there’s an underlying psychological component, such as anxiety or depression, so discussing these aspects with your doctor could prove insightful. Hormonal imbalances, like those involving cortisol (Cushing’s syndrome), might also be considered, requiring tests like cortisol levels or a dexamethasone suppression test. Conditions like celiac disease or gastrointestinal issues might lead to poor nutrient absorption and weight loss, so a celiac panel or other GI evaluations could be valuable, depending on any accompanying symptoms. If you’re experiencing symptoms like night sweats, persistent fever, or lymph node swelling, it may suggest an infection or malignancy, making it crucial to seek immediate medical attention. Ensuring you’re eating a balanced diet and maintaining a healthy lifestyle alongside these evaluations is advisable. Share all symptoms with your doctor to facilitate precise diagnosis and management.
