What could be causing my dizziness and blurred vision after sitting for a long time?

Client_2c1bd2

Hello Doctor, I am a 14-year-old male. I spend about 10–11 hours a day using my phone. Occasionally, when I stand up suddenly after sitting for a long period of time, I experience dizziness and blurred vision. The symptoms usually last for about 1 to 5 seconds and then go away completely. This does not happen every time I stand up, only occasionally. I have never fainted or lost consciousness. I do not have chest pain or palpitations when it happens. I also do not drink much water during the day. I would like to know what could be causing these symptoms and whether I should be concerned.

How long have you been experiencing dizziness and blurred vision?:

- 1-6 months

How often do these symptoms occur when you stand up?:

- Frequently (daily)

Do you feel any other symptoms when you experience dizziness?:

- No other symptoms

How is your hydration throughout the day?:

- I rarely drink water

Have you noticed if certain activities trigger your symptoms?:

- Standing up quickly

How would you describe your overall energy levels during the day?:

- Very low energy

Do you have any family history of dizziness or related health issues?:

- No, none that I know

Based on the symptoms you described, it’s possible that you’re experiencing something called orthostatic hypotension. This condition happens when blood pressure drops suddenly upon standing up, causing temporary dizziness and blurred vision. The symptoms you’re feeling – brief dizziness and blurred vision after standing – are quite characteristic of this. Given your age and lifestyle, spending long periods sitting, especially using devices like a phone, can contribute to this. When you sit for a while, blood can pool in the lower parts of the body; standing up quickly may lead to a temporary decrease in blood flow to the brain, causing those symptoms. It’s worth noting that dehydration can exacerbate these symptoms. You mentioned not drinking much water, and staying adequately hydrated can help maintain healthy blood volume and pressure. Try to drink plenty of water throughout the day, aiming for at least 8 cups daily, depending on your activity level and climate. You can also manage symptoms by standing up slowly, giving your body a moment to adapt. Regular breaks from the screen to move around can improve circulation and potentially reduce episodes. While orthostatic hypotension is common, if you ever experience more severe symptoms like prolonged dizziness, fainting, chest pain, or your symptoms worsen, it’d be important to consult a healthcare provider to rule out other causes. They may perform a thorough clinical assessment to ensure there’s no underlying condition that needs addressing. Being proactive with hydration and movement should generally help alleviate the mild, occasional symptoms you’re experiencing now.
