What to do for insomnia and sleep problems after COVID with racing thoughts at night?
Main complaint: Sleep problems / insomnia I have been struggling with sleep since after COVID. For the last several months I have maintained a strict sleep routine: Same sleep and wake time (around 10:30 pm to 7 am) Morning sunlight Evening wind-down before sleep Journaling/meditation tried I prioritize sleep a lot Pattern: Some nights I sleep normally without problems. Some nights my mind becomes very active before sleep. My body feels tired and sleepy, but my brain keeps thinking and does not allow me to sleep. Thoughts include: worry about not sleeping “what will happen tomorrow?” study/work/gym worries random imaginary/exciting thoughts Recent worsening: Last week I had about 3 bad nights in a row (I still got some hours of sleep, but it was poor). Recently I had a night where I felt like I got almost no sleep (around 30 minutes). After these nights I feel: daytime fogginess tiredness dizziness/lightheaded feeling worse gym recovery/body pain digestion feels affected Lifestyle: I exercise regularly: gym about 5 days/week, around 1 hour I train in the morning. I eat normally, but if I eat too little at dinner I feel hungry at night and sleep becomes harder. Additional pattern I noticed: When I stay awake for several hours, I often become hungry and after eating I sometimes fall asleep. If I feel calm and don’t overthink, I can sleep normally. Main trigger I noticed: Fear of not sleeping makes my thoughts worse. I feel my body wants sleep but my mind stays alert.
