Doctors’ responses
Experiencing lower back pain that worsens with certain activities, like driving, can significantly affect daily life. Given your situation, it’s clear that the back pain is persistent and more than likely musculoskeletal in origin, possibly due to posture, muscle strain, or even an underlying issue like disc degeneration or facet joint pain. Since your thyroid levels and blood sugar seem well-controlled, and your pain also affects areas like the heel, an assessment of your biomechanics might be useful. Physical therapy can be a beneficial first step, focusing on exercises that strengthen core muscles and improve lumbar region flexibility. A trained physiotherapist can guide you on exercises such as pelvic tilts, bridges, and the McKenzie extension exercises, aimed at relieving lower back pain and improving flexibility. Also, reviewing your posture, especially during long periods of driving can help. When seating, ensure your seat is adjusted to support the natural curve of the spine. Medications like NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) or acetaminophen can be used to manage pain, but these should be used based on your doctor’s recommendation, especially if you take other medications or have underlying conditions. If pain persists, or there are new symptoms like numbness or weakness, it might be necessary to reevaluate the pain causes through an MRI or other imaging studies. You might also explore options like a standing desk if you have a desk job. Always consult with a healthcare professional before initiating new therapies, particularly over-the-counter medications.
