Doctors’ responses

Sudden outbreak of pus-filled and inflamed acne can be unsettling, but several factors could be contributing to this. Hormonal changes, stress, diet, use of certain skincare products, or a reaction to new medications can spark such outbreaks. Pay attention to any recent changes you’ve made in your lifestyle. Start by cleansing your face gently twice daily with a mild, non-comedogenic cleanser to remove dirt and excess oil. Over scrubbing or using harsh cleansers can irritate your skin further. Avoid picking or squeezing the acne, as it can cause more inflammation and potentially lead to scarring. Consider applying a topical treatment containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid which can help reduce bacteria and dead skin cells clogging your pores. These can be found over-the-counter, but it’s crucial to follow the usage directions to avoid over-dryness or irritation. Try to keep your skin moisturized using a lightweight, non-oily moisturizer to balance your skin’s hydration without adding to the oiliness. Sometimes, underlying issues like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or a hormonal imbalance can cause such outbreaks, making it essential to consult with a dermatologist or general practitioner if these treatments don’t help or if the lesions are severe and growing quickly. They may recommend a blood test or a specialized plan that could include prescription medications such as antibiotics or retinoids. If you experience severe pain, fever, or rapid swelling, seek medical attention promptly to rule out an infection that may require more immediate intervention. Remember, addressing the root cause of the acne efficiently is key to managing your skin health.
