How to maintain liver function? - #12493

Arjun

I am really worried about my liver lately. A few months ago, I started feeling super fatigued, and my doctor did some blood tests—turns out my liver enzymes were a bit elevated. Since then, I’ve been trying to eat healthier, but I feel lost. I keep googling how to maintain liver function, but there’s just so much info out there, and it’s overwhelming. Sometimes I cut out sugar and processed foods, but then I crave them and end up back where I started! I’m not a big drinker, but I do enjoy a glass of wine occasionally. Would that affect my liver function? I’ve heard that hydration is key to maintaining liver function too, but I’m not sure how much water I should even be drinking daily. Another thing that messes with me—sometimes I feel this dull ache in my right side, and I'm not sure if I should be worried about it. I want to be proactive and really learn how to maintain liver function, but what should I focus on? Are there specific foods or supplements you guys would recommend? Just feel kinda lost and want to make sure I’m doing everything right.

Doctors’ responses

First and foremost, when it comes to maintaining liver function, a balanced diet and lifestyle adjustments are central. Elevated liver enzymes indicate inflammation or damage, so it’s wise to focus on reducing anything that could stress the liver further. Since you’re already cutting down on sugar and processed foods, keep that a priority. These foods can contribute to fatty liver disease, which is a common cause of liver enzyme elevation. Instead, aim for a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Foods like leafy greens, broccoli, and berries are particularly beneficial due to their antioxidant properties. Healthy fats from sources like fish and nuts also support liver health. Moderation is key with alcohol; while occasional consumption is typically safe, it can affect the liver, especially if there’s pre-existing inflammation. If you feel a dull ache on your right side, it could be related to the liver, but it’s best evaluated in context with other symptoms. Always ready to discuss this with your doctor if it persists or worsens.

Hydration does help liver function, as water is essential for filteration processes, but there’s no one-size-fits-all amount. A commonly recommended target is about 8 glasses (64 ounces) a day, but this varies based on individual needs and other health factors. If you’re active, you might need more.

As for supplements, it’s best to be cautious and seek your healthcare provider’s advice as some might actually harm the liver or interact with your current medications. Milk thistle is one supplement often mentioned for liver health, but research is mixed about its effectiveness. Always consult with a professional before starting any supplement regimen. Remember, it’s important to follow up with your healthcare provider regularly to monitor liver function and manage any potential underlying causes behind your symptoms.
