can we use onion juice on hair daily - #15687

Dev

I am really curious about this whole onion juice thing for hair. I’ve been reading loads about it since my hair has been falling out a bit more than usual lately, or maybe it’s just the season. Anyway, my friend suggested that I try onion juice, saying it works wonders for hair health and, wow, I thought the strong smell was a bit much at first—but hey, desperate times, right? I actually gave it a shot last week, mixed it with some coconut oil ‘cause I read that helps with the smell... but I got this nagging doubt about using onion juice on hair every day. Like, is that even safe? Can we use onion juice on hair daily? I mean, I put it on and left it for an hour before rinsing, but it’s kinda sticky and weird. Did I overdo it? I’m wondering if daily use might irritate my scalp since it feels a bit sensitive, but I just wanna regrow my hair and maybe speed things up. Has anyone tried this daily routine with onion juice? Does it actually help or am I just wasting time and making my hair smell like a salad? Help!

Doctors’ responses

Using onion juice on hair daily is not generally recommended, primarily due to its potential to cause scalp irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin. While onion juice has gained popularity for its supposed benefits in hair growth, there is limited scientific evidence to conclusively support these claims. Onion juice contains sulfur compounds, which may enhance collagen production and consequently support hair growth. However, these same compounds can be quite harsh on the scalp when applied frequently. If you are experiencing sensitivity or a stinging sensation upon application, you might be overdoing it, and daily use could potentially exacerbate this issue.

A more balanced approach would be to use onion juice 1 to 2 times a week initially to gauge your scalp’s reaction. Mixing it with coconut oil or another carrier oil can indeed help mitigate the strong smell and might reduce potential irritation. It’s advisable to do a patch test first before a full application to ensure your skin does not react adversely. If you don’t notice improvements or if irritation persists, it might be worth exploring other options or consulting with a dermatologist. Hair loss can be attributed to a range of factors such as genetics, stress, nutrition, or underlying health conditions, so identifying the root cause is crucial for effective treatment. If hair loss continues or worsens, seeking personalized advice from a healthcare provider is essential to identify any underlying issues and explore appropriate treatments safely.
