can we apply papaya directly on face - #16684

Aryan

I am wondering about something I read about skincare. I have this kinda stubborn dry skin and saw a post saying we should try using papaya for skincare. Its supposed to do wonders and got me super curious! I’ve even seen people talking about how they just apply papaya directly on face. But I’m not sure how safe that is, you know? Like, can we apply papaya directly on face without any issue? I mean, I tried it once last week after mashing it up and left it on for like 15 mins, but my face felt kinda weird after? Not burning or anything, just like... tingling? Is that normal? And I've got these occasional breakouts too, which makes me even more hesitant. A friend told me papaya’s got amazing enzymes that help exfoliate. But still, can we apply papaya directly on face if you have sensitive skin? Should I be mixing it with something or is straight-up papaya the way to go? I just really wanna get this right, you know. Just a little scared of trying things that might irritate my skin even more. Any advice would be super helpful!

Doctors’ responses

Applying papaya directly on the face can provide some benefits, owing to its natural enzymes like papain that can help exfoliate the skin. However, it’s essential to proceed with caution, especially if you have sensitive skin or experience tingling sensations as you described. The tingling might occur due to the fruit’s potency, as the enzymes work on removing dead skin cells. This can be beneficial, but also a bit much for sensitive or acne-prone skin. If you want to try it again, first consider testing on a small patch of skin to see how your face reacts—maybe on an area that’s not super visible—to avoid any unwanted reactions like redness or irritation.

Often, diluting the papaya by mixing it with gentler ingredients can lessen its intensity. Try combining it with Ingredients like plain yogurt or honey to create a soothing mask, which can offer additional nourishing benefits and possibly reduce irritation. Leave the mixture on your skin for around 10 to 15 minutes, and then rinse off gently with lukewarm water. Be sure to moisturize afterward to maintain hydration since papaya can be somewhat drying.

Given your occasional breakouts, it’s also crucial to introduce new skincare ingredients gradually. Using it once a week initially might be a good pace to start, so you can monitor your skin’s response. If you notice any persistent irritation, redness, or worsening of breakouts, it’s advisable to step back from using it and consult with a dermatologist. They can provide guidance tailored to your specific skin needs and help determine whether papaya or other exfoliating treatments are appropriate for you. Remember, always listen to your skin—if something doesn’t feel right, it’s best not to push through.
