how to make kidneys healthy - #16940

Kian

I am looking for some advice on how to make kidneys healthy. Last month, I went for a routine check-up and they did some blood tests and found out my creatinine levels are a bit elevated. I was kinda freaking out because my uncle had kidney problems and I don’t want to end up like him. I am trying to eat better, cut back on salt and processed foods, which I heard can help in knowing how to make kidneys healthy. But I’m not sure what else I can do, like should I drink more water or is there a specific diet that I should stick to? I read somewhere that avoiding excessive protein could help too, but isn't protein important for other stuff? I also started jogging again, trying to stay active because I know that helps. Honestly, I'm just confused—like are there any supplements or specific foods I should be adding to my diet, or even some home remedies? I feel like if I don’t figure out how to make kidneys healthy, I might end up in a bad place. I just need some real-life tips that can make a difference without being overly complicated. Any ideas?

To maintain kidney health, especially with elevated creatinine levels, there are several steps you can take that are grounded in evidence-based practices. First, staying well-hydrated is important but doesn’t mean excessively drinking water. Aim for the general recommendation of about eight 8-ounce glasses a day, unless advised otherwise by your healthcare provider, as overhydration can be counterproductive in certain conditions. A balanced diet is key; reduce salt intake, as you mentioned you’re doing, since excessive sodium can increase blood pressure and strain the kidneys. Reducing intake of processed and high-sodium foods is a smart move. As for protein, it’s true that while protein is essential for overall health, high-protein diets can be taxing on the kidneys, especially if you have pre-existing kidney issues. Moderation is essential; focus on lean sources like fish, poultry, tofu, and legumes. Be conscious of portion sizes. Limiting sugar and unhealthy fats can also contribute to overall kidney and cardiovascular health. Regular physical activity like your jogging routine is beneficial; it helps maintain healthy blood pressure and body weight, which are critical for kidney function. Just ensure any exercise regimen is suitable to your fitness level and health status. There isn’t much evidence supporting supplements or specific supplements specifically for kidney health, and some could even be harmful, so it’s usually best to focus on getting nutrients from a well-rounded diet unless a deficiency is identified by your doctor. Be cautious with over-the-counter painkillers like NSAIDs, as these can harm the kidneys, especially if used regularly. If you smoke, quitting can improve overall kidney health significantly. Regarding home remedies, there is a lack of scientific backing for most claims, so they shouldn’t be relied upon as primary interventions. Routine check-ups with your healthcare provider to monitor kidney function, adjust any medications, and evaluate your unique needs are crucial. Always consult your doctor before making any major lifestyle changes, especially those related to diet and physical activity, to ensure they’re tailored to your specific health needs.
