color corrector for hyperpigmentation - #17123

Dev

I am really stressed about my skin lately. I've had these dark spots on my face that I think are hyperpigmentation, and it’s really getting me down. I tried so many creams and treatments, but nothing seems to work. My friend mentioned this color corrector for hyperpigmentation— has anyone here used it? She said it’s like a magic wand! I looked it up, and apparently, color corrector for hyperpigmentation comes in different shades, but I’m honestly confused about which one I should get. When I put on my foundation, the spots still kinda show through, and honestly, it ruins my confidence. I’m also worried I’ll just be wasting money on another product that does nothing. I saw a tutorial online, and they used this green one but isn’t that for redness? What if I apply the wrong color corrector for hyperpigmentation— will it make my skin worse? I have no clue how to even apply it, too! Should I put that on under my foundation or over it?? If you’ve used a color corrector for hyperpigmentation, did it actually help? Any tips on how to choose the right color would be super helpful, I’d really appreciate it!

Doctors’ responses

Color correctors can indeed be helpful for concealing hyperpigmentation, but it’s important to select the right shade to counterbalance the dark spots. For hyperpigmentation, often shades like peach, orange, or red work best because they neutralize the blue or gray undertones typical of dark spots, especially on medium to darker skin tones. Light peachs are often better suited for lighter skin tones. It might be the case that a green color corrector isn’t the right choice for this issue, as green is generally used to neutralize redness, not darkness.

In terms of application, you generally want to apply color correctors under your foundation. Start by applying a thin layer of the color corrector directly onto the hyperpigmented areas and gently blend it in. It can help to use a small brush or your fingertips for a more precise application. Once it’s evenly blended, apply your foundation over the top. Be careful to pat the foundation on rather than swipe so that you don’t disturb the corrector beneath it.

While correctors can be a short-term solution, if hyperpigmentation is persistent, it might be sensible to consult with a dermatologist for other treatment options like topical retinoids, hydroquinone, or procedures like chemical peels or laser treatments, depending on the severity. Just be cautious with over-use of color correcting products—too much layering may make your makeup look cakey. If you’re trying a new product and experience any skin irritation, it’s a good idea to stop using it and seek professional advice. Your friend may have had success with this approach, but individual skin responses can vary, and too frequent attempts with different products might aggravate your skin. Remember, consistency with skin treatments often yields the best results over time.
