where is the liver situated - #17272

Ishita

I am really confused about where is the liver situated in my body. Like, I thought I knew, but then my doctor said something that made me question everything. A couple of weeks ago, I started feeling this weird pain in my upper right abdomen, and I kinda brushed it off at first, thinking maybe I just overate or something. But after a few days, it started to feel like a dull ache that wouldn't go away. When I went in for a check-up, my doc pressed on my abdomen, and I felt a sharp pain. He mentioned something about the liver and told me to get some blood tests. I got my results back, and my enzyme levels were a bit off, which made me super worried! It got me thinking about where is the liver situated exactly. Like, is it under my rib cage, or more towards my stomach? And what does that mean for the pain I'm feeling? I mean, could it be related to the liver issues or is it just something random? I need to understand where is the liver situated in relation to all this, because every time I Google it, I get all this medical jargon that's hard to follow! Any insight would be super helpful, thanks!

Doctors' responses

The liver is located in the upper right portion of your abdomen, situated mostly behind the rib cage. It’s primarily under the ribs, toward the right side of the body, and extends towards the center near the stomach. It’s relatively close to the stomach, but more nestled beneath your lower ribs. The dull ache you’re feeling could very well be related to your liver, especially given that your enzyme levels are off. Elevated liver enzymes can indicate inflammation or damage to liver cells, which could explain your pain. Since your doctor already started looking into this with blood tests, it’s important to follow up on those results. The next steps often involve more comprehensive liver function tests or imaging like an ultrasound, to get a clearer picture of what’s happening. While many conditions could cause elevated liver enzymes and abdominal pain (like fatty liver disease, hepatitis, or even gallbladder issues), it’s crucial to work closely with your healthcare provider to determine the exact cause. In the meantime, try to maintain a balanced diet, avoid alcohol, and consult your doctor before taking any new medications or supplements, as these can affect your liver health. If your symptoms worsen—such as increased pain, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), or digestive issues—it’s essential to seek medical attention promptly. Addressing the root cause of these symptoms is vital for effective management and recovery.
