red pimple on face - #19754

Vivaan

I am super worried about this red pimple on my face that popped up out of nowhere! Like, one day I was fine, and then bam—there it was, big and angry. I thought maybe it was just a regular pimple, but this thing feels different. It's kinda painful, you know? I tried to ignore it thinking it was just hormonal or something, but I've had it for over a week and it's still hanging around. No sign of going away, which is super frustrating. I even tried using one of those over-the-counter creams for acne, but that didn't seem to do much. It doesn’t have a head or anything either, just this big red spot. Like, why won't this red pimple on my face leave me alone? I’ve been washing my face regularly and trying to be careful about what I put on it, but I'm starting to wonder if I should see a doctor or if it might clear up on its own. What do you guys think? Should I be worrying more about this red pimple on my face, or is it one of those things that will just go away with time? Ugh, I just need some advice!

Doctors' responses

The red pimple on your face that’s hanging around for a week and feels painful might be more than just a regular acne spot. While common acne lesions can be stubborn, the absence of a head and the prolonged pain could hint at something else, like a cystic acne or even a skin infection. Cystic acne often occurs deeper beneath the skin and can be tender and red, while possible infection such as an abscess could develop if bacteria invade the hair follicle or gland, potentially requiring more focused treatment.

Given that over-the-counter creams haven’t worked and it’s been over a week, you might be dealing with more than an ordinary pimple. It’s advisable to monitor for changes like increasing size, significant pain, or the appearance of systemic symptoms like a fever. If any of these occur, or if the spot doesn’t begin to diminish with simple self-care like gentle cleansing and warm compresses, it might be time to visit a healthcare professional. They can provide a proper evaluation, potentially prescribe oral or topical antibiotics if an infection’s suspected, or recommend other treatments like draining if necessary.

Try not to squeeze or pick at it to prevent aggravation or potential scarring. Keep your skincare routine mild, avoid harsh products, and protect the area from sun, which can sometimes worsen inflamed skin. Being proactive with medical consultation is a good step to ensure you’re taking an effective approach. In most cases, early intervention with appropriate treatment can prevent complications and promote healing.
