how long does pigmentation take to fade after laser - #20038

Kian

I am super worried about the pigmentation on my skin after getting laser treatment. I had a couple of sessions for some dark spots that were bothering me for years, and my doctor said this should help but now it looks like the pigmentation is still very visible. I mean, I expected a bit of redness right after the procedure but it's been almost a month!! and I'm wondering how long does pigmentation take to fade after laser? I’ve read online that some people see results in a few days but others say it could take weeks or even months. This all feels pretty confusing. I did everything the doc said—kept it moisturized and even avoided sun exposure like religiously! I started feeling hopeful thinking I would see improvements, but it just seems to be lingering and I can't shake this feeling that maybe I should've gone for a different treatment or even a different doctor. Do you think how long does pigmentation take to fade after laser varies by person? Or could something be wrong with the treatment itself? I have got friends who did this and got results way quicker, which makes me a bit envious. Any insight or advice from anyone?

Doctors' responses

Pigmentation after laser treatment can indeed take a varying amount of time to fade, often depending on individual skin type, the specific condition being treated, and the type of laser used during the procedure. While some individuals may notice changes within days to a few weeks, for others, it can certainly take several months. Factors like your skin’s response to the treatment, the depth, and size of the pigmentation, as well as the healing processes, can influence how quickly results manifest. In general, it’s common for laser-treated areas to look darkened initially before lightening, owing to how pigmentation is broken down in your skin. If it’s only been about a month, you’re well within the normal range for seeing some persisting pigmentation as your skin continues to heal and regenerate. It’s good to hear you’ve been protecting your skin from sun exposure, which can definitely impact recovery time and effectiveness. Since you’re worried, however, it may be worth discussing the lingering pigmentation with your provider—they can confirm whether this timeframe is expected for your skin type and laser treatment, or provide suggestions if they believe things aren’t progressing typically. They might consider adjustments like topical treatments or follow-up sessions if further action is warranted. Comparing results with friends can be frustrating, but remember your unique skin characteristics and health history can make a significant difference. Be reassured that variations in healing are pretty common and your provider should guide you on the best path tailored to your skin.
