symptoms of swelling in liver - #21656

Rian

I am really concerned about some health issues I've been having lately. My doc mentioned possible swelling in my liver after some tests, but I’m feeling kinda lost about the symptoms of swelling in liver. A couple months ago, I started feeling this weird pain in my upper right abdomen and some unusual tiredness that just wouldn’t shake off. I thought maybe it was just some stress or something, but then I noticed my skin was getting itchy and my eyes, ugh they kinda looked yellowish, which freaked me out. I read online that these could be symptoms of swelling in liver, but I don’t know how to connect it all. The doc did some blood tests and an ultrasound but I’m still waiting on the results, feels like forever! What are the common symptoms of swelling in liver? Are there other things that I should be looking out for? Like, do I need to change my diet or lifestyle while I’m waiting for the results? I mean, the thought of having issues with my liver is honestly a little scary, and all this uncertainty isn’t helping. Can anyone share their experiences with symptoms of swelling in liver? I just want to be proactive and understand what’s goin’ on.

Doctors' responses

Swelling in the liver, medically known as hepatomegaly, can present with several symptoms, though some might not even be noticeable until the liver is quite enlarged. The symptoms you’re experiencing, like pain in the upper right abdomen and fatigue, are indeed common indicators. The yellowish tint to your eyes (jaundice) suggests possible bile accumulation due to impaired liver function. Itching is often related to the same underlying issue. Other signs can include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and darker urine. While your symptoms align with liver swelling, only medical tests, like the blood work and ultrasound you mentioned, can confirm the diagnosis and pinpoint the cause, whether it’s infections, alcohol-related liver disease, fatty liver, or other conditions. While waiting for results, reducing alcohol intake and adopting a balanced diet low in saturated fats can be beneficial for liver health. Adding more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins might support liver function, though this should complement specialised guidance from your doctor. Stay hydrated, and consider monitoring other symptoms like bruising easily, unexplained weight loss, or confusion — report these if they occur. Also, keep stress in check, as it can exacerbate physical symptoms. Engage in moderate exercise if you’re able, which can support overall wellness. However, if your symptoms worsen, especially the jaundice or abdominal pain, seeking immediate medical attention is crucial. Your healthcare team will guide you further once your test results are ready, tailoring advice specific to your condition. Be patient with the process, and stay in communication with your healthcare providers.
