black coffee for loose motion - #21674

Aisha

I am dealing with this really annoying issue and need some advice. For the past few days, I’ve had loose motion like crazy. It all started after I tried a new food truck in town. My stomach was upset the next day, and now it’s been over 48 hours! I’m seriously wondering if black coffee for loose motion could help like some people recommend. Yesterday, in a desperate attempt to feel better, I thought maybe drinking black coffee for loose motion would at least stimulate my digestion in some way? I drank a couple of cups, but I’m not sure it helped at all! I'm kind of worried because I haven’t been able to eat much either. I feel like my body is in this weird cycle where I can’t stop running to the bathroom. Should I stick with black coffee for loose motion or avoid it? Is it actually a good idea, or will it just make it worse? I’m feeling pretty lost right now, and I really don’t want this to drag on any longer. Would love to hear any thoughts or advice on using black coffee for loose motion! Does anyone have personal experience?

Doctors' responses

Using black coffee for loose motion may not be the best approach. Actually, coffee can sometimes exacerbate diarrhea due to its acidity and caffeine content, which can irritate the digestive tract and have a laxative effect in some people. Since it’s been over 48 hours already and you’ve noticed the symptoms haven’t improved, it’s probably wise to step back from coffee for now. Instead, let’s think about other more effective ways to manage loose motions. Start by focusing on hydration; diarrhea can cause dehydration fast, so make sure to drink plenty of fluids like water, clear broths, and oral rehydration solutions which help replace lost electrolytes. Consider incorporating the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) which traditionally helps in firming up stools and soothing an upset stomach. Be cautious with what you’re eating—steer clear of greasy, spicy, or dairy-heavy meals as these might worsen the symptoms. If your diarrhea persists beyond a few days, or if you start noticing blood in your stools, experience severe abdominal pain, or have a high fever, it’s important to seek medical advice. These might signal a more serious condition requiring professional evaluation. It can also be helpful to identify if any specific foods or activities correlate with symptom worsening, which can provide valuable clues to your healthcare provider. When it comes to self-treatment, keep it simple and safe, prioritizing hydration and a gentle diet.
