why piles occur - #22146

Divya

I am feeling really frustrated because for the last few weeks, I've been dealing with this unbearable discomfort down there, and I just found out it might be piles. I’ve been having these painful sessions in the bathroom, and sometimes there's even blood, which freaked me out totally! I started to research why piles occur and honestly, it’s confusing. They say it could be from straining too much or maybe it's connected to my recent lifestyle changes. I mean, I went from a pretty active life to sitting at my desk all day working from home, and I think that’s playing a part. Is it really just about the diet too? I’ve tried to eat more fiber, but why piles occur still puzzles me because my stool is not as hard anymore but the pain is still there! I spoke to a friend who said stress can also be a factor in why piles occur but is that really true? I’m really hoping to get some clarity because I don't want to keep living like this. I guess I’m just looking for advice from all of you allopathic docs on how to manage this and prevent it from coming back. Any thoughts would be super helpful!

Piles, or hemorrhoids, occur when the veins in the lower rectum or anus become swollen and inflamed. Several factors contribute to their development. Prolonged straining during bowel movements can increase pressure on these veins, which could explain the discomfort and bleeding you’re experiencing. A sedentary lifestyle, like sitting for prolonged periods, might also contribute as it can exacerbate blood pooling in the rectal veins. Your recent shift to working from home might indeed play a role here. Diet plays a crucial part too: even though you’re consuming more fiber and your stools have softened, it can take time for changes to fully resolve symptoms, as healing of the existing hemorrhoids can take a while. Staying consistently hydrated is also important, as it helps to ease stool passage. Stress is a more indirect factor; while it doesn’t cause piles directly, it might exacerbate them by affecting bowel habits or dietary choices. To manage piles, it’s crucial to maintain a balanced diet rich in fiber, including fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Avoid prolonged sitting or straining in the bathroom. Over-the-counter treatments like creams or suppositories may provide relief for mild cases. In more persistent or severe cases, seeking medical consultation would be prudent, as options like rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy, or surgical interventions might be needed for comprehensive management. If you notice significant pain, swelling, or bleeding, seeking medical help promptly is advisable to rule out more serious conditions.
