is oil good for hair - #22411

Aisha

I am in a bit of a dilemma about my hair and just wanted some advice from you all. My hair has been feeling super dry and frizzy lately, like it lost all its life. I heard that is oil good for hair, but I kinda don’t know how to start or what oil to choose. Went to the store yesterday and there are, like, a million options! Coconut oil, argan oil, olive oil, you name it. I tried putting some coconut oil on it a couple of days ago and, honestly, it felt a little greasy. I left it on overnight thinking it would help, but now I’m not sure if is oil good for hair or if I'm just ruining it more. My friend swears by it and says it changed her hair game completely but I’m a bit skeptical. Also, how often should I use it? Like, once a week or more? And do I have to wash it out afterwards or can I just leave it in? Ugh, I just want shiny, manageable hair again! Is oil good for hair or am I going down the wrong road here? Any suggestions or personal experiences with different oils would be super helpful right now!

Indeed, using oil on hair can be beneficial, but it’s all about choosing the right type and application method. Oils can help lock in moisture, add shine, and reduce frizz, but not all oils suit every hair type or concern. Coconut oil is quite popular due to its deep penetrate capabilities, which can effectively moisturize dry hair. However, it might feel greasy if too much is used or if not washed out properly. Since you’ve mentioned your hair felt greasy after using coconut oil, you might prefer lighter alternatives like argan oil or jojoba oil—these are generally less greasy and can still offer moisturizing benefits. When applying, start with a small amount to avoid oversaturation; you can always add more if needed. It’s usually best to apply oil on the mid-lengths and ends of your hair—areas most prone to dryness—rather than the scalp, which might encourage greasiness. Regarding frequency, try starting with once a week and see how your hair responds. Over time, you can adjust if it seems to respond well—either more often or keeping it at weekly intervals. Yes, it’s generally a good idea to wash the oil out after a few hours or overnight, depending on your comfort. This prevents buildup and keeps your hair from looking oily. A mild shampoo should suffice for washing out the oil without stripping essential moisture. But remember, everyone’s hair reacts differently, so it might take a bit of experimentation to discover what works best for you. If your dryness continues despite this, it may be worth consulting a dermatologist to check for any underlying scalp or hair issues that could be contributing.
