can we eat beetroot at night - #22719

Vivaan

I am really confused about something and hope someone can help me! A few weeks ago, I read about the benefits of beetroot and it's like super healthy, right? I started incorporating it into my diet, but now I'm wondering "can we eat beetroot at night?" Last night, I made a huge salad with beetroot, thinking it's all good for digestion and all that, but my friend said eating it at night might not be the best idea. I usually notice I feel more energetic after having it, but what if it messes with my sleep? I mean, I don't want to be tossing and turning because I had a salad too late. Also, my stomach sometimes feels a bit weird after eating it, especially if I’ve had a lot of it. Can we eat beetroot at night or should I just stick to mornings? I really want to enjoy it but I'm kind of worried about the timing, you know? And would cooking it instead make any difference? Any info would be super helpful!

Doctors' responses

Eating beetroot at night is generally safe and shouldn’t inherently cause any issues with sleep for most people. Beetroot is rich in nitrates, which can support blood flow and potentially improve exercise performance, but this effect doesn’t typically interfere with sleep. However, some individuals do experience mild digestive discomfort after eating beetroot, especially in large quantities. If you’ve noticed stomach issues after consuming beetroot, it might be due to its fiber content or natural sugars, which could lead to bloating or an upset stomach, depending on individual sensitivity.

Considering this, if you experience digestive discomfort after eating beetroot, you might want to try eating smaller portions initially to see how your body reacts. You could also consider consuming it earlier in the evening to give your digestive system time to process it before bed. Cooking beetroot can help make it easier to digest for some people, as the heat breaks down certain fibers and sugars, potentially reducing any digestive issues you experience. It’s worth trying both cooked and raw beetroot to see which sits better with you.

Additionally, while beetroot can give you an energy boost due to its nutritional profile, it’s unlikely to be stimulating in a way that disrupts sleep. However, if you consistently notice increased energy levels after eating it at night, you might prefer having it in the morning or earlier in the day instead. Keep in mind that your overall diet and other factors, like caffeine intake and sleep habits, also play crucial roles in your sleep quality. If your sleep issues persist beyond the consumption of beetroot, it might be worth looking at these other aspects or consulting with a healthcare provider for personalized advice.
