can we eat papaya on empty stomach - #23196

Om

I am kinda confused about something with my food choices lately. So, last week, I started this healthy eating kick, trying to add more fruits and veggies to my diet. I read somewhere that papaya is super good for digestion and packed with nutrients. But then, I came across a post that said can we eat papaya on empty stomach? I mean, I've been having papaya first thing in the morning every day, thinking it was a smart choice! Like, it feels light and fresh, but now I’m worried if it’s a bad idea. I did notice some stomach discomfort after eating it a couple of times. Could it be from eating papaya on empty stomach? I guess I also wonder, is it just me or do other people feel weird after having papaya before breakfast too? It's just puzzling me! Would love any insight on if can we eat papaya on empty stomach or not. Should I switch it up and eat it later in the day? I really enjoy it, but I don't wanna mess up my tummy more than it already is – it has been kinda sensitive lately, y’know? Any advice or personal experiences would be helpful!

Doctors' responses

Eating papaya on an empty stomach is generally considered safe for most people, and it is often recommended for its digestive benefits due to the enzyme papain. However, it’s possible that eating papaya first thing in the morning could trigger discomfort in some individuals, especially if you have a sensitive stomach or existing gastrointestinal issues. Papaya is high in fiber and can stimulate digestion, which, in a small number of cases, might cause mild discomfort if your stomach is sensitive to fiber-rich foods when empty. The slight acidity of papaya might also bother some people’s stomach lining when eaten alone without any other foods to buffer it. If you’ve noticed consistent discomfort after having papaya, it could be worth trying to eat it a bit later in the day instead of on an empty stomach. You might want to pair it with other food, like a small portion of yogurt or oatmeal, to see if that alleviates your symptoms. Alternatively, spacing out its consumption to a mid-morning snack could be gentler on your digestive system. Of course, if your discomfort persists or worsens, consider discussing it further with a healthcare provider to rule out any underlying concerns or intolerances, especially given your description of a sensitive stomach. If you’re focused on a balanced diet, ensuring variety in fruits and vegetables can also benefit your digestive health overall, so mixing in other fruits like berries, apples, or bananas might help balance your intake while keeping your diet fresh and nutritious.
