which fruit juice is good for cold and cough - #23221

Amara

I am just feeling pretty awful right now and can't shake this cold and cough!! Like, I woke up yesterday feeling like a zombie, and my throat hurts so bad, it’s like swallowing razor blades. Anyway, I've been trying over-the-counter meds, but they’re not working as fast as I hoped. I keep hearing people talking about which fruit juice is good for cold and cough, but I can’t figure it out! I thought about orange juice, but then I read somewhere that too much acid can actually irritate my throat even more? Ugh, what a mess! My friend suggested warm apple juice, but I’m confused if that would really help. Also, someone told me to try pomegranate juice because of its antioxidants or something. Do antioxidants even help with cold and cough? I seem to be just stuck in this cycle of not knowing which fruit juice is good for cold and cough, and honestly, I’m over it! If anyone has actual experience with this or any recommendations on which fruit juice is good for cold and cough, please help me out! I can’t keep sipping on hot tea forever, right?

Doctors' responses

When it comes to choosing fruit juice for easing cold and cough symptoms, it’s true some options might offer more support than others. While orange juice is often recommended due to its vitamin C content, the acidity might indeed irritate a sore throat. In that case, maybe orange juice isn’t ideal for everyone, especially if you’re feeling discomfort. Warm apple juice can be soothing as it’s less likely to irritate than an acidic juice; apple juice also provides some vitamin C and hydration. However, warm drinks in general can help soothe a sore throat, which is why tea or warm beverages may be comforting. Pomegranate juice stands out for its high level of antioxidants, which may be beneficial as they can support your immune system. While antioxidants won’t directly cure a cold or cough, they might help your body to better handle the symptoms. Staying hydrated is crucial, whatever juice you choose, as hydration can thin mucus and ease congestion. It might be helpful to just try small amounts of these juices and see which feels best for you. Remember, though, fruit juices often contain a lot of sugar, which can sometimes exacerbate inflammation if consumed in large amounts, so enjoy in moderation. If your symptoms persist or worsen, consulting with a healthcare provider is a good plan to rule out any other underlying issues. Also, consider gentle throat lozenges or saline nasal sprays alongside your juice choices for some symptomatic relief. Always pay attention to how your body responds; effective relief is often a combination of various approaches.
