is sugarcane good for diabetes patients - #23618

Kavya

I am really curious if sugarcane is good for diabetes patients because I have a friend who’s been diagnosed with diabetes recently and she’s just been so lost with what she can eat. She used to love cane juice, and every time we hang out, she keeps asking if it’s okay to have even a little bit of sugarcane. The other day, she took a tiny sip of sugarcane juice, and I didn’t know if I should be worried or not! I read somewhere that sugarcane is more natural and might have some benefits, like providing energy without the same spikes as other sugars. But then again, I don’t know if that’s just a myth or something. Some of our friends think sugarcane is a bad idea for her and say it could raise her blood sugar, but isn’t natural sugar supposed to be less harmful? It's all so confusing! Has anyone here done research or had experience with sugarcane and diabetes? What do doctors recommend? Is sugarcane good for diabetes patients, or should we completely avoid it? I really wanna help her out but need to understand if she should stay away from it completely or if it could be okay in small amounts. Thanks!

Doctors' responses

When it comes to diabetes management, particularly in regulating blood glucose levels, sugarcane and sugarcane juice can be a bit tricky. Unfortunately, despite being “natural”, sugarcane is basically sugar in its raw form. Its consumption will indeed lead to a rapid increase in blood sugars, potentially causing spikes that are typically undesirable for someone watching their glucose levels closely. This is due to it’s high glycemic index, meaning it can quickly tip the balance of your friend’s blood glucose control, especially if she already has difficulties managing her levels. The notion that natural sugars are inherently better for glucose levels is a common misconception. All sugars, whether naturally occurring or refined, can affect blood sugar levels.

If your friend enjoys sugarcane juice, it would be best for her to enjoy it only occasionally, and in moderation. Monitoring her blood glucose levels after consumption is a prudent approach that may give better insight into how it affects her specifically. It’s also important that she informs her primary care provider or endocrinologist about her diet and any spikes or falls in her sugar levels. In some cases, sugarcane might be used as a quick source of glucose if someone with diabetes experiences hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), but for someone aiming to maintain stable sugar levels, it might be best to avoid it as a regular part of the diet. Encouraging her to explore other drinks or snacks with lower glycemic index, like water, unsweetened teas, or whole fruits with dietary fiber might be a healthier way forward. If she has not already, considering sessions with a certified dietitian can also provide her tailored advice suited for her lifestyle and her specific medical condition.
