how to use giloy stem - #23668

Navya

I am super confused about how to use giloy stem. Last month, my friend mentioned it, and I googled it, but I found all this information and didn’t know where to start! I mean, I’ve had this chronic fatigue thing going on, and she said giloy could help boost my immunity or something. I got some dried giloy stem from an herbal shop, but like, now what? Should I boil it, or make a tea, or just chew on it? I tried chewing it, but it was kinda woody and tasted weird! 😅 I saw some posts saying you can make a decoction, but not sure how long to boil it or if it should be mixed with something else. I’m also worried about the dosage—like, how much of the giloy stem should I take? Every article says something different! Some say you can take it every day while others seem to recommend a break? Feeling lost here, and I’ve been hesitant to just dive in blindly. Anyone figured out how to use giloy stem properly? Is there a right way or a wrong way to incorporate it? Thanks a ton for any advice!

Giloy, also known as Tinospora cordifolia, is a common herbal remedy in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, often used for its alleged immune-boosting properties. However, it’s important to approach its use with a degree of caution and awareness, especially in conjunction with any chronic conditions like fatigue. Starting with the basics, typically, giloy is used in a decoction form rather than chewing it directly, due to its tough, fibrous texture. To prepare a decoction, take about 1-2 grams of dried giloy stem and boil it in about two cups of water until it’s reduced to one cup. This usually takes around 20-30 minutes. You can strain this and drink it when it cools slightly. Daily consumption is often advised in traditional uses, but it’s crucial to monitor your body’s response. Regarding dosage, sticking to about a cup a day is relatively standard, but it’s wise to consult with a healthcare professional before you start—especially considering variances in individual health contexts and potential interactions with other medications you might be taking. Given your chronic fatigue, it’s very important not to rely solely on herbal remedies without a broader clinical evaluation. If your symptoms persist, get in touch with a healthcare provider to explore other potential causes or treatment avenues for the fatigue, such as thyroid function or anemia, to name a couple common possibilities. The fact that health advice about giloy varies widely is indicative of the need for personalized guidance, ideally from someone familiar with both your medical history and the indications for medications or supplements. As with any supplement, what works as a general rule may need tailoring to suit your specific needs and conditions.
