what is the symptoms of dengue fever

Vikram

I am really worried about my health right now. A few days ago, I started feeling super tired, like I just couldn't shake it off. Then, out of nowhere, I got this awful headache that just wouldn’t go away. Then, I thought maybe it was just a flu or something. But then my joints started hurting a lot, like I ran a marathon or something. I started to wonder what is the symptoms of dengue fever? I've heard some friends mention it, and they said the fever hit them really hard. Along with the headache, I also noticed I'm feeling a bit nauseous, and I’ve had this weird rash that looked like little spots on my arms. Ugh! I even check my temp and it was around 102°F. That’s when I really started to freak out, trying to figure out what is the symptoms of dengue fever… I don't want to ignore anything serious. I’m not sure if I should be going to the hospital or what exactly to look out for. I’ve read that some symptoms can get pretty bad. Does anyone know what is the symptoms of dengue fever? Like, what else should I watch for? Should I get tested? I don’t even know if I should be taking pain relievers with the joint pain. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Doctors' responses

Dengue fever symptoms can indeed be quite varied and sometimes intense. Initially, you often see a sudden onset of high fever, which you’ve observed around 102°F. Along with the fever, a severe headache and retro-orbital pain, which is pain behind the eyes, can be a common complaint. Your fatigue, joint and muscle pain — sometimes referred to as “bone-breaking fever” due to its severity — and nausea are also frequently mentioned in dengue infections. The rash you noted, resembling small red spots, can occur in many cases and sometimes begins a few days after the fever starts. It’s important also to be aware of warning signs that might suggest a progression to the more severe dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome. These include severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding from gums or nose, blood in vomit or feces, cold or clammy skin, and difficulty breathing. Given the symptoms you’ve described, it’s wise to seek medical evaluation sooner rather than later. They might recommend a blood test that can determine if you have dengue fever. Avoid taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or aspirin as they can increase bleeding risk. Acetaminophen or paracetamol is usually considered safer for the fever and joint pains associated with dengue, but it’s always good to confirm this with a healthcare provider first. Hydration is crucial, so ensure you’re drinking plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. If your symptoms worsen or if you experience any of the severe signs mentioned above, it’s imperative to get to a hospital immediately as the condition can progress quickly.
