does increase in testosterone increase height - #24363

Diya

I am really confused about something that’s been on my mind for a while. Last month, I went to the doctor for some fatigue issues and found out that my testosterone levels were lower than they should be. I was told that testosterone contributes a lot to growth and development, especially during adolescence. But does increase in testosterone increase height? I mean, I know that usually growth plates in bones close after puberty, so is it really possible that boosting testosterone could make someone taller, even if they're older? I’m 21 and only 5'6", and I sometimes feel self-conscious about my height. I’ve been doing some reading and heard different things. Some sites say that once you reach adulthood, like me, taking testosterone wouldn’t have any effect on height. Others claim that in certain cases it could help? What’s the real deal here? Does increase in testosterone increase height for anyone? Are there any studies or personal experiences anyone can share? I’m just trying to figure this all out and make sense of what it could mean for my future. Any advice or insights would be really helpful!

Doctors' responses

Testosterone significantly influences growth and development during adolescence by aiding the surge in height through its effect on growth plates and bone development. However, by the time most people have reached adulthood, these growth plates have fused or closed, halting any further increase in height. At 21, it’s quite likely those growth plates have already closed. Increasing testosterone levels at this point will not result in increased height. The relationship between testosterone and height mostly pertains to periods of growth before and during puberty. In cases where individuals have conditions like delayed puberty or hypogonadism, testosterone therapy may cause a noticeable increase in height during those key growth years. However, this therapeutic effect diminishes once skeletal maturity is reached. While managing low testosterone can be important for maintaining energy, muscle strength, mood stability, and bone health, it won’t contribute to an increase in height in adults. Keep in mind that while testosterone therapy is beneficial for certain health conditions, taking it unnecessarily or without medical guidance carries risks. Any decision regarding hormone treatments should involve a conversation with your healthcare provider. They can recommend appropriate management strategies for any symptoms or health concerns related to testosterone levels, ensuring your treatment is safe and effective for your specific situation.
