can we apply mustard oil on hair daily - #24675

Tanmay

I am kinda worried about my hair lately. For the past few months, I've been dealing with some major frizz and dryness that just won't go away. I heard that mustard oil is like super good for hair, like it can make it shiny and help with growth too. My friend even told me that applying mustard oil on hair daily could be the key, but I'm not sure if that's true. I got a bottle of mustard oil from the store last week, and I've been thinking about starting a daily routine with it. The thing is, I don’t wanna mess up my hair even more, y'know? Like, can we really apply mustard oil on hair daily without any issues? What if it makes my hair greasy or something? I did a patch test, and thankfully, no weird reactions happened, so that’s a plus. But then again, I keep hearing mixed reviews about it. Some say it’s great, and others warn against daily use. Do people really see benefits from using mustard oil on hair every day? or will it just make my hair look like a total oily mess? I just need some insights from all you brilliant docs out there! Any advice would really help, thanks!

Doctors' responses

Applying mustard oil daily to your hair can be beneficial for some people, but there are a few points to consider before making it a routine. Mustard oil is known for its rich content of fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins that can nourish the scalp and hair, potentially enhancing shine and promoting healthier hair growth over time. However, the daily application could lead to greasiness, especially for those with naturally oily hair or scalp. If your hair type tends towards being oily, daily use might make your hair look limp and weighted down, rather than luxurious and healthy.

For a balanced approach, starting with application two to three times a week might be more practical. This frequency can provide the benefit of moisture and nutrients without overwhelming your hair. Remember to massage the oil gently into your scalp to stimulate blood circulation and promote healthful growth. Leave it in for about 30 minutes to an hour before washing it out with a mild shampoo. This way, you ensure you’re nourishing your scalp and hair without overdoing it.

In terms of hair type and condition, it’s important to tailor your approach. If you notice any buildup, adjust the frequency or consider using a clarifying shampoo occasionally to prevent any adverse effects like a greasy appearance. Also, if after a few weeks you don’t observe an improvement in your dryness or frizz, it may be worth exploring other treatments or consulting with a dermatologist or trichologist. They can provide personalized advice or evaluate if an underlying scalp issue might be contributing to your hair concerns. This way, you can ensure your hair health journey aligns well with your unique situation.
