how to treat fever in jaundice - #24782

Shreya

I am really worried right now. Last week my uncle started having these chills and this crazy high temperature, like over 102°F, but he's also been dealing with jaundice for the past few weeks. He’s had some tests done and the doctors say he has some liver issues, and I can't really understand everything, but it seems serious. I just don’t know how to treat fever in jaundice, like is it even safe to give him fever reducers? I mean, paracetamol is what we usually use for fevers but I heard that can affect the liver?? Also, with the jaundice thing, he hasn’t been eating much and is super fatigued. How do we balance the treatment for the fever while also being cautious about his liver health? Plus, he gets sooo sweaty and then chills, like how does that even work? Is there something different we should consider when looking up how to treat fever in jaundice? Any advice would really help us right now, just feeling a bit lost with all the info we’re getting! It’s like one doc says one thing, another says something else. How to treat fever in jaundice properly and what should we be looking out for? Any dos and don'ts would be amazing!

Doctors' responses

Managing a fever in someone with jaundice, especially with underlying liver problems, can indeed be a bit tricky. You’re correct in being cautious with paracetamol (also known as acetaminophen); while it’s generally considered safe in moderate doses, liver impairment can change this. It’s particularly important to avoid exceeding the recommended dosage and to be extra cautious with it if there’s any significant liver dysfunction. Additionally, consult a doctor before giving any medication to ensure it’s safe for his liver condition. Keeping him well-hydrated is crucial, as dehydration can exacerbate both fever and liver problems. Encourage fluid intake—water, clear broths, or oral rehydration solutions—these can help maintain hydration without overstraining the liver with heavy or solid foods. Regarding chills and sweating, they’re often the body’s response to fever and can be part of a cycle; they’re little more than the body’s thermoregulation process kicking in. Make sure he’s resting in a comfortable environment with a light blanket that can be adjusted to his comfort level. Sometimes tepid sponging—a gentle sponge bath with lukewarm water—can provide relief; be careful to avoid cold water as it can trigger more chills. Additionally, seek medical advice if the fever persists or if any new symptoms develop; jaundice itself is a symptom that often indicates an underlying condition that needs to be addressed promptly. Always inform the healthcare team of any over-the-counter medication being considered so they can advise appropriately considering his specific condition. Close monitoring and regular follow-up with healthcare professionals are essential when addressing fever in conjunction with jaundice and liver issues.
