how to control body temperature - #24789

Reet

I am really worried because my body temperature seems all over the place these days. One minute I'm feeling really hot, like I'm burning up, and then suddenly I'm freezing cold. I thought it was just the changing weather, but last week I was actually sweating when it was cool outside! I've been kinda restless at night trying to figure out how to control body temperature better. I even checked my temp with a thermometer, and it was 99.6F one time and then 97.2F an hour later! My friends say it's probably just stress, but I don't know. I mean, sometimes my palms get super sweaty and I've been having these weird chills too. I've tried drinking cold water and taking cool showers, but nothing seems to work in the long run. Do you guys have any tips on how to control body temperature? Like, is there certain food I should be eating or things I should be avoiding? How does one even begin to figure out how to control body temperature effectively? I just want to feel normal again, is that too much to ask? Any help would be appreciated!

Doctors' responses

Fluctuating body temperature can be unsettling, but the first step is to try to identify any underlying causes or patterns in your symptoms. It’s essential to observe whether these temperature changes accompany other signs, such as fatigue, weight change, or changes in appetite, which might suggest a hormonal imbalance or infection. Stress can indeed impact your body temperature, primarily through its effects on your nervous system, which can alter your stress hormone levels and, consequently, your perceived temperature. Regarding diet, focusing on balanced meals and avoiding excessive caffeine and alcohol can help, as they can influence your body’s thermoregulation. Meanwhile, staying hydrated is crucial to maintain a steady body temperature. It’s a good idea to keep track of your symptoms over time. Note when these temperature shifts occur and what activities or foods precede them. This might help identify a pattern or trigger for these fluctuations. Practicing relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises or meditation, can help manage stress and potentially stabilize your temperature. However, since your experience includes significant and unexplained changes, consider seeing a healthcare professional to rule out any conditions like thyroid dysfunction, infection, or another systemic issue. They might perform lab tests or further evaluations to pinpoint the problem. Remember, if you ever experience persistent fever, weight loss, or other concerning symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.
