does onion juice remove dandruff - #25076

Tara

I am really struggling with this dandruff issue, and I keep hearing people talking about onion juice. Like, does onion juice remove dandruff or is it just some old wives’ tale? I mean, I’ve tried so many products and they just don’t seem to work for me. My scalp gets all dry and flaky, and sometimes it’s even itchyy, ugh. I read somewhere that onion juice is supposed to help with dandruff because of its antibacterial properties, but I can’t imagine rubbing onion on my head! I had one friend who swore it was a game changer for her; she had similar issues and after using onion juice, she said it totally cleared up her scalp. I tried it one time and it smelled horrible though, like I thought I was gonna scare people away. Yet, does onion juice remove dandruff that decisively, like is there science behind it, or am I just getting my hopes up? Would love to hear other experiences with this. Do you have to apply it every day, or just once in a while? I’m really at my wits’ end here, any advice would be sooo appreciated!!

Doctors' responses

Onion juice has been rumored to have some potential for relieving dandruff, mainly due to its anti-inflammatory and anitbacterial properties. The sulfur compounds in onions might offer some benefit by reducing the fungus, Malassezia, commonly associated with dandruff. However, scientific studies specifically proving its efficacy on dandruff are limited. Most evidence supporting its use comes from anecdotal reports and not rigorous clinical trials. If you’re considering trying onion juice, it’s generally safe for most people though the smell can be quite strong, and it might be more of an occasional treatment rather than something you’d want to use daily. Apply onion juice by massaging it into the scalp, leaving it on for about 15-30 minutes, then washing it out thoroughly with a mild shampoo to remove the odor. If the smell is intolerable, you might mix in some soothing agents like aloe vera or coconut oil, which have moisturizing properties that might also help soothe a flaky scalp. Remember, although some people find success with home remedies, dandruff can be stubborn and might require medical treatments. If over-the-counter shampoos containing zinc pyrithione or ketoconazole haven’t worked for you, it could be worth discussing with a dermatologist. They can provide a more comprehensive assessment or prescribe medicated shampoo or topical treatments that might be more effective. Ultimately, the best course of action depends on the severity of your symptoms and any underlying skin conditions. Dandruff that persists despite trying multiple options should be evaluated by a healthcare professional, as it might be a sign of something like seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis.
